Safer WA Communities

Safer WA Communities

Safety is for everyone.

Safety is not selective. When hate escalates - whether Nationally, locally, or through targeted harassment campaigns - it undermines community safety for all Western Australians.

This is not a “rainbow issue.” It’s a public safety issue.

Take action now for safer WA communities!

Extend hate speech protections in WA

A recent rise in targeted anti-LGBTIQA+ activity, escalating political rhetoric about transgender people, and increased reports of harassment, combined with broader incidents of violence, has created genuine anxiety within our community.

Hate-motivated actions have significant and lasting impacts, particularly for those already facing marginalisation. Yet WA has some of the worst anti-vilification laws in the country. Punishments exist for hate crimes only on the basis of race, leaving gaps in protections against targeted abuse on the basis of disability, sexuality, gender identity, sex characteristics, and religion.

Expanding state-based legal protections against vilification is essential to creating a Western Australia where all people can live free from fear, discrimination, and hate.

Safety should not depend on who you are.

We call on the Cook Government to urgently extend anti-vilification protections to all communities that experience targeted abuse, including on the basis of:

  • sexuality
  • gender identity
  • sex characteristics
  • disability
  • HIV status
  • religion
